Managing Income Taxes | Checking on refunds and offsets

Now that the 2020 tax due date has come and gone, you may be wondering about the status of your refund. Fortunately, once you have filed and given it about three days or so, you should be able to see where your deposit or check stands. Here’s what you will need:

A copy of your filed income tax return that shows your tax filing status and refund amount. You will also need your social security number handy.

Once you have this information, you can go to the IRS website and click on the tab that says Check My Refund Status. This is where you will input your information and get an update. If enough time has passed in processing, there will be a deposit date of when you can expect the funds to hit your account.

Keep in mind that if you owe a federal debt, then your refund can be offset. In the event that your tax refund is reduced, the Bureau of Fiscal Services will send a letter notifying you of where the refund was applied. You can also contact the FMS at 1-800-304-3107 to get more information about an offset. If you believe that there was an error with your refund, call the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service at 1-877-777-4778 (or visit www.irs.gov/advocate) for guidance about your options.
